Abstract

1471914 Alkali metal-sulphur cells BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 10 March 1975 [28 Feb 1974] 9132/74 Heading H1B An alkali metal-sulphur cell comprises a liquid alkali metal anode, a liquid sulphur cathode 4, a solid electrolyte 1 and current collectors 2, 3 in contact with the alkali metal and sulphur, at least that part of the collector 2 contacting the sulphur material consisting of an electronically conducting ceramic body having a resistivity of 10 ohm-cm. or less at 350‹ C. The electrolyte 1 is in the form of a tube of #-alumina provided with a flange 8 of α-alumina. The current collector 2 consists of a ceramic tube made of the oxides, borides, nitrides, carbides, sulphides or silicides of certain elements, suitable materials being VO 2 , CrO 2 , ReO 2 , MoO 2 , Ti 2 O 3 , SiC, SnO 2 doped with Nb 2 O 5 , TiO 2 doped with Nb 2 O 5 , Sb 2 O 5 ; Fe 3 O 4 , SrMnO 3 doped with CaMnO 3 ; Fe 2 O 3 doped with TiO 2 . The tube 2 may be coated with a layer 5 of copper or aluminium and the top of the cell is closed by a compression seal assembly 7. In a modification the current collector 2 is surrounded by the sulphur cathode and is in the form of a ceramic tube containing aluminium or steel wool and a central metal rod. A stack of cells connected in series to form a battery is also described.
