Abstract

1482621 Electrode assembly for thermal cells CATALYST RESEARCH CORP 21 July 1971 34295/71 Heading H1B [Also in Division C5] An electrode unit for a thermal battery comprises a thin metal sheet shaped as in Fig. 2 and coated at 25 with a second metal. The plate is folded at F to form one electrode enclosing part 27 of an adjacent element which forms the other electrode. The cells 11 ... 15 are arranged as in Fig. 1. the end cells 10, 16 being provided with leads by modifying the shape of the metal sheets. The metal sheet may be of Ni alloy, Cu, Fe, Pt, or Ag and the coating metal may be Ca or Mg. In each cell an electrolyte pad and a depolarizer pad are arranged on each side of the central electrode. The solid electrolyte may be LiBr-KBr, LiOH, KOH, LiNO 3 -LiOH, LiCl-KCl, or LiOH-LiCl and may be supported on a carrier of metal oxide, asbestos, ceramic, or woven or felted fibre glass. The depolarizer pad consists of a carrier impregnated with a depolarizer. Alternatively, potassium dichromate or chromate or molybdic or tungstic oxide may be added to the electrolyte or an electrode may be coated with a water slurry of tungstic oxide and lead chromate, and heated. Groups of cells in series may be connected either in series or in parallel with other groups of cells. Batteries may be made which have high e.m.f. for use in charging condenser plates in airborne applications. Heat for bringing the battery into operation by melting the electrolyte is supplied by ignition of heat pads between adjacent cell assemblies. The heat pads are made from a finely divided metal and an oxidizing agent (see Division C5].
