Abstract

1471879 Control of vehicle headlamps by DC motors LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 27 Sept 1974 [11 Oct 1973 28 Nov 1973 7 Dec 1973] 47552/73 55115/73 and 56951/73 Headings H2H and H2J The headlamps (not shown) of a vehicle are moved between extended and retracted positions by respective D.C. motors 14 which are energized when the movable contact 15 of a switch 10 is changed between the position shown and the lower position, thereby switching on or off the sidelights and the main beam or dipped filaments 22 or 24 (controlled by the position of a changeover switch 11), each motor being energized by operation of a relay 12 and controlling the movable contact 27 of a changeover switch 13, whereby the latter operates to deenergize the relay 12 at or towards the end of the lamp movement and so produce short circuit braking of the motor. In a typical extending operation, movement of contact 15 to the lower position energizes the sidelights and filaments 22 or 24 and completes a circuit to relay coil 28 through members 51, 21a, 20 and 27, the relay contacts 30, 32 closing to switch on the motor which runs until it changes contact 27 from contact 20 to 16, so de-energizing coil 28 and changing contact 30 from contact 32 to 31 to short circuit the motor armature. In a retracting operation, movement of contact 15 to the upper position switches off the side and headlights and energizes the coil 28 through members 55a, 17a, 16 and 27, a similar motor operation then occurring as in the extending action. The headlamps may be extended with the contact 15 in its upper position by operation of a contact 26 to momentarily energize the main beam filaments 22, consequent current flow through a heater 52 closing contacts 54 after a time delay to energize coil 55b, change over contacts 55a and so energize the coil 28 through members 21a, 20 and 27. Switch 52, 54 has a long opening time delay whereby the lamps are not retracted immediately contact 26 is opened, to allow flashing of the lamps by several operations of the contact 26 in rapid succession. An arrangement of this type is described and claimed in Specification 1,471,652. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the circuit point 23 is connected to the line 21 through a diode (56) to enable the lamps to be extended more quickly when the contact 26 is closed.
