Abstract

1471728 Tamper-indicating closures for portable containers MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 16 Sept 1974 [21 Aug 1974 17 Sept 1973] 40272/74 Headings B8C and B8D A container 10, which encloses material, has an aperture 12 sealed by means of a portion of sheet material 14 which requires deformation to break the seal, the sheet material comprising a visible layer 20 which opacifies upon flexure whereby, upon deformation of the sheet material, it exhibits a visible alteration. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the aperture 12 in a can lid is sealed by the tape closure 14 to which is firmly adhered an indicator strip 16 comprising a stress-opacifying layer 20 bonded to a coloured layer 22 which is attached, by an adhesive layer 24, to a strong film layer 26 of the tape closure 14. The latter is sealed around the aperture 12 in the can lid by a layer of adhesive 28. The visible stress-opacifying layer may bear printed indicia which becomes visible against an opaque background when the visible layer is flexed. Coloured layers may be provided above and below the visible layer, the uppermost coloured layer being transparent. In a modification, the separate indicator strip 16 is omitted and the film 26 is formed of a strong stress-opacifying material, a coloured layer, such as 22, being disposed between the film 26 and the adhesive 28. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, a cover 36 is sealed to the body of a can 35 by means of a strip closure 34 having a pull tab 40 and an indicator strip 41 adjacent the tab 40. As shown in Fig. 3, tape closures with indicator strips 16, are die-cut from an elongated strip unwound from a roll 30. A heat-shrink indicator tape (47), having a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer (48), is applied around the rim (49) of a food container (44) and an easily-removable cover (46) applied thereto, Fig. 5, not shown. The indicator tape 47 is heat-shrunk around the rim 49, as shown in Fig. 6, e.g. by a jet of air at a temperature of approximately 100-200‹ C. Examples are described for making the stressopacifying indicator strips and tapes.
