Abstract
1471663 Shearing BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 11 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 28743/73 Heading B3W [Also in Division F3] An explosive cutter 1 comprises an expansion chamber 7 for the gas released by the explosion of a cutting charge in casing 2. A strand-off 8 spaces the easing 2 from a workpiece, e.g. a pipe 10. A filler port 6 for admitting explosive to the casing 2 is closable by a detonating cord gland (not shown) which engages a screw-thread 9. The chamber 7 and stand-off 8 are flushed with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, at one atmosphere and gas inlet at 5 and an outlet (not shown) are closed. The cutter 1 is placed against a plate or, in the form of a collar, about pipe 10 and the charge is detonated to sever the plate or pipe. The ratio of the volume of the explosion chamber to the combined volume of the casing 2 and stand-off 8 is at least 1À5 : 1 preferably 2 to 5 : 1. The casing 2 is so located that the effective centre of the explosion is at or near the geometric centre of the cross-section of the expansion chamber 7. An alternative embodiment of cutter has an outer casing of circular cross-section.
