Abstract

1291051 Simulating explosions NITROCHEMIE GmbH 4 Aug 1965 [19 Sept 1964] 33457/65 Heading F3A [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for simulating the pressure and temperature of an explosion, particularly of a nuclear bomb explosion, ecomprises a tubular chamber open at both ends and containing a propellant grain, e.g. a conventional solventless nitrocellulose-nitroglycerin type grain, at least one baffle plate, and igniting means located at equal distances from the ends of the chamber. In one particular apparatus there is a grating faced by a baffle plate and adjoining a Lavel nozzle at each end of the chamber. The baffle plates may, however, be located in the nozzle throats or even in front of the nozzles, and may consist of a plastic, e.g. polyethylene, or of sheet metal, e.g. copper. Ignition is preferably effected electrically with the aid of an initiating charge or by means of a detonating fuze cord. The apparatus is intended for testing the resistance of protective devices, such as shelters, shelter doors and ceilings. By suitable bunching of a number of such chambers, surfaces of a considerable size can be exposed. The duration of the pressure wave produced is between a half and one second which makes the device particularly suitable for simulating nuclear bomb explosions.
