147,161. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., (Assignees of Upson, R. H.). Nov. 9, 1916, [Convention date]. Aerostats; cars, suspending. A kite or other captive balloon, or a dirigible balloon, is made in two sections 10, 11 separated by a longitudinal partition 24 to which are attached the main suspension lines of the car; and the sections are shaped somewhat like an aerofoil in longitudinal section, i.e. flat underneath and convex on the top, to increse the dynamic lift, by the insertion of gores 23 or by cutting away similar gores but with the widest portion at the bottom. The car is further suspended by lines 28, over which are arranged side fins 27. Each section of the balloon is fitted with a ballonet 13, filled by means of a wind funnel 14, 15 and arranged to operate a gas valve 12 automatically by a cord 12<1>. The valve can be operated also by a cord 20, and a ripping panel 19 by a cord 18, both leading to the car. Rudder fins 16 are secured to the underside of the balloon and to the funnels 14. A tail-cup is formed by a flap 25 connected at its ends by cross-lines 26 to the funnels 14 and by lines 26' to the balloon, and is concaved by the wind.
