Abstract

1471484 Endless conveyers E WEBER 21 May 1974 [22 May 1973 9 May 1974] 22729/74 Heading B8A [Also in Divisions F3-F4] Apparatus for drying flat printed material comprises a chain conveyer for lifting and lowering the material, and reciprocating pusher and/or puller transfer elements which act only on the leading and/or trailing end of the material for transfer of the material from the ascending to the decending conveyer run. As shown in Figs. 1-6 the drier comprises a housing 1 supporting two spaced driven endless conveyer chains 3 on each pair of spaced links 7 of which are secured a bar 8 and supports 9 are secured thereto. A series of pushers 17 connected to a bar 18 slidable on rails 21 is reciprocated by a piston 19 of a cylinder 20 so that bifurcated heads 17<SP>1</SP> push the presented sheet from the topmost horizontal support 9 over a plate 13 on a cross member 16 below shaft 40 for sprockets 4 for the chains 3 on to the topmost horizontal descending support 9. The conveyer chains 3 are moved step by step in synchronism with the reciprocating pushers 17. Pivoted hooks 23 on a shaft 22 are displaced from contact with the topmost support by a piston 24 of a cylinder 25 when the pushers are stationary. The sheets are fed automatically to the supports by a conveyer the sheets being moved through a slit 36 with a pivoted spring biased shutter 37. A similar conveyer discharges the sheets. In further embodiments, a pull element with grippers pulls the sheet on to the descending support. In another embodiment a pusher and pull element are combined, and both may have grippers. In the embodiment of Fig. 22 (not shown) each sheet is transferred by slides (49) connected to a piston-rod (54) of a cylinder (55) and actuated when the support (9<SP>1</SP>) is inclined to the horizontal, the support (9<SP>1</SP>) may actuate a switch or photo-cell to stop the conveyer. As shown in Fig. 28 push rods 56, transfer the inclined sheet over a driven endless conveyer 63 on to the descending support 9. Endless conveyers 66, 67 feed and discharge the sheets. The conveyer 63 may have suction apertures to retain the printed sheets.
