1471403 Fireballs for solid-fuel grates A W G ABERNETHY 24 March 1976 [8 May 1975] 19429/75 Addition to 1459023 Heading F4W A solid-fuel heating unit as described in Specification 1,459,023 is modified in that the bed 12 of fire-resistant spheres or pseudospheres 13 comprises more than one layer and air is supplied to the top of the bed 12 in addition to air supplied upwards through the bed. In the form shown, air is supplied through a valve controlled inlet 19 in an ash pan door and through inlets 17A, 17B which may be provided in a fire door. The air flow rate through inlets 17A, 17B is controlled by butterfly or hit-and-miss valves 18A, 18B which may be actuated thermostatically. The riddle 11 is moved by a timed oscillatory electric motor.
