Abstract

1471397 Laminates BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd 28 May 1976 [30 May 1975 16 March 1976] 23628/75 and 10356/76 Heading B5N A method of applying a protective strippable film of a synthetic thermoplastic material to at least one surface of a metal sheet or coated metal sheet which during fabrication is subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature above the melting point of the thermoplastic material comprises withdrawing the freshly fabricated metal sheet or coated metal sheet from the heat treatment zone, pressing the film against at least one surface of the metal sheet or coated metal sheet before it has cooled below the melting point of the thermoplastic material for a sufficient time to adhere the film thereto and quenching the resultant assembly. The metal may be steel, copper or aluminium and the optional coating thereon may be polyvinylidene fluoride, a silicon modified polyester, an alkyd resin, a polyvinyl chloride organo sol, a polyvinyl chloride plastisol, a silicon acrylic or an acrylic resin, specified thermoplastic materials for the film being high, medium or low density polyethylene optionally admixed with a minor proportion of an elastomer, e.g. a block copolymer of polystyrene - polyisobutadiene - polyisoprene or polystyrene - polyisoprene - polystyrene, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, calendered polyvinyl chloride or polypropylene, the film optionally including an ultra-violet light absorber. The method may be effected continuously, pressure being applied by calendering and quenching effected on a water bath, the film having been optionally pretreated by corona discharge.
