The tube is clamped between a gasket 412 in a head 42 and a mating face in a head 44. A scalloped edge single bevel knife 342 is advanced in a cutter head (318) mounted in the head 44 into a slot 402 in the head 42 to part the tube. The hot gas flows from a chamber 398 in the head 42 through slots 406 at a constant velocity along the length of the slots to urge the parted edges against welded detents 352 in the cutter head (318). Exhaust ports 332, 334 are provided in the head 44. A hot gas supply head (436, Figs. 29, 30 not shown), reciprocates with each head during the welding, while cooling gas supply head (482, Figs. 31, 32 not shown), subsequently reciprocates with each head, to feed ambient or refrigerated gas through the chamber 398 and on to the welded edges. Longitudinal sealing.-The longitudinal edges of the web are sealed by a hot air welder 28 carried by a vernier slide on a main slide. The welder is automatically retracted when the apparatus stops, and has elements to heat compressed air. Adjustably mounted beneath the welder 28 is cool air supply head 30.
