Abstract

1,238,373. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. 1 May, 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 21374/68. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for forming a continuous heat seal 20 between at least two overlapping portions 7, 8 of a travelling heat-sealable sheet wrapping material 1, e.g. heat-seal coated oriented polypropylene film, comprises a base-plate 9 over which the portions 7, 8 are drawn, an air chamber 12 having an outlet 13 facing the plate 9 for maintaining an air-cushion between the chamber 12 and the sheet material passing over the plate 9, means 16 for supplying air under pressure to the chamber 12 and a heater 18 to heat the air to a temperature above the heatsealing temperature of the sheet material, the gap 14 between the chamber 12 and the plate 9 through which air escapes from the air-cushion to the atmosphere being of such dimensions that it provides the principal restriction to flow of air in the path between the air supply means and the atmosphere. Preferably, the gap 14 is of a width between 0À0005 and 0À010 inch, e.g. 0À005 inch. As shown, the material 1 passes from a roll 2 around a former 6 which shapes it into a tube 1<SP>1</SP> with overlapping edge portions 7, 8. The plate 9 comprises a metal strip 10 suspended within the former 6 and covered with a silicone rubber sleeve 11. The chamber 12 has an open side 13 facing the plate 9 and is supplied with air from a compressor 16 through the heater 18. The chamber 12 and/or the plate 9 may be heated to reduce cooling in the sealing zone to a minimum. The sealed tube 1<SP>1</SP> is drawn downwardly by reciprocating jaws 21, 22 which transversely seal and cut the tube at bag-length intervals around goods 23. In modifications, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the side of the air chamber which faces the plate 9 is closed except for a row of apertures or slots or a single slot in line with the direction of travel of the sheet material.
