Abstract

1471110 Threaded capsules; seals W R GRACE & CO 10 April 1974 [12 April 1973] 34229/76 Divided out of 1471109 Heading B8T A closure blank having a moulded gasket shaped, before application to a bottle neck, with a substantially flat central panel 4 and an adjoining annular rib 5 spaced from the closure skirt, is secured on an externally threaded bottle neck by pressing the closure axially on to the neck and simultaneously both deforming the part of the closure skirt adjacent the flat end wall of the closure radially inward to reduce the radial dimensions over a limited axial extent starting from the end wall, and deforming a portion of the skirt spaced from the end wall radially inward on to the threads of the bottle neck to cause the skirt to adopt a threaded configuration, the space between the annular rib and the skirt being diminished during the deformation of the closure skirt. The radial extent of the flat central panel 4 from the centre of the closure to the beginning of the rib 5 is 25-45% of the diameter of the closure blank. The gasket is formed by inserting a solid pellet of plasticized polyvinyl chloride into the blank, heating the pellet to a temperature at which the polyvinyl chloride is formable and moulding it with a heated mould surface to the desired configuration.
