Abstract

1470989 Fixing turbine guide vanes WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 34247/74 Heading FIT Ceramic turbine nozzle guide vanes 36 are supported between inner and outer rings 14, 48 by means of ceramic caps 34, 38 having respective grooves 35, 37 resiliently urged into engagement with the inner and outer ends of the vanes. Each pair of adjacent outer caps 38, 38' has a tongue 40 slidably engaging a circumferential groove 42 in an insulator pad 44 restrained from circumferential movement by a bolt 46 and by the lip 51 on a metal shoe 50. The latter has a partspherical projection 52 pivotally engaging a corresponding recess 56 at the end of a plunger 54 urged inwards within sleeve 58 by spring 60. A shoe 22 associated with each pair of inner caps 34, 34' and with an insulator pad 24 has two partspherical projections 20 pivotally mounted in corresponding recesses in studs 18. The guide vane assembly is thus provided with some freedom for circumferential movement. Cooling air can be supplied through holes 16, 49. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), each of the ceramic end caps (62, 80) is of increasing thickness in the downstream direction so that the gas loads tend to urge each vane (72) more tightly into the grooves (66, 76) in the respective caps. The ceramic parts may be silicon nitride or carbide.
