Abstract

1470783 Rolling screws; self-tapping screws GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd 5 Dec 1974 [8 Dec 1973] 57007/73 Headings B3M and B3N A screw 21 (Fig. 2) is formed from a blank 10 (Fig. 1) having a radially extending head 12 and a shank 11, by rolling the blank between two dies to form a thread on the shank and then to turn the periphery of the head over in a dome shape. The resulting thread is completely formed adjacent the head and enables the screw to be used for fastening together two thin sheets. The thread may be of the self-tapping kind. Each die (Fig. 4) is provided with a plate 15 or 17 on its upper surface, the plates co-operating with the head 12 of a blank to turn it over. the plates are attached to the finishing ends of the dies at a position in which the thread on the blank, at least in the area adjacent the head, is already finished during a forming step.
