Abstract

1470550 Breathing apparatus T B PAUL 24 June 1974 [6 Feb 1974] 28000/74 Heading A5T A breathing apparatus comprises two gas conduit loops shaving a common portion over part of their length, which portion holds a gas-purifying substance, means for permitting only uni-directional motion of gas through each loop, a mouthpiece 1 in one loop, a gas tight inflatable bag 6 forming part of the other loop and means 13 for admitting make-up gas to the apparatus. The common portion is a canister 5 having a cylindrical centre portion and at least one removable end cap (15) Fig. 3 (not shown) containing two ports for communication with the gas conduit loops, one loop being defined by ports 9, 19, breathing hose 4 and mouthpiece 1, the other loop including ports 7, 8 opening into bag 6. Check valves 2, 3 and 7A, 8A ensure that gas flows in an anticlockwise direction through the mouthpiece and bag loops respectively. Makeup gas is admitted to the apparatus from a high pressure reservoir 13 via a pressure reducing valve 12 and enters at the upstream end 11 of the common canister. A pressure relief valve 17 to regulate the operating gas pressure, is located in bag 6 and comprises a hollow cylindrical body (20) Fig. 7, (not shown) mounting a pressure adjusting screw (26) acting via spring (23), on a movable disc (24) which bears on diaphragm (25). An alternative embodiment, Figs. 8-13, (not shown) also comprises a common cylindrical canister (116) and two end caps (150), (151), but all connections except the gas supply inlet are made to one end cap (151) which contains four ports (107)-(110), (109) and (110) having no valves and connecting with the breathing hose, (107), (108) containing valves (107A), (108A) and communicating with bag 6. Ports (108), (110) pass through end cap (151) and open in the canister body while ports (107), (109) communicate with a chamber (156), formed inside the end cap, which opens into a hollow cylindrical cup (157) sealed over a central pipe (152) extending almost to the other end cap where it opens into the canister body. The arrangement of the valves ensures rebreathed gas passes through the common portion, through the bag and again through the common portion before being inhaled.
