Abstract
1470399 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 29 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 14144/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division G3] A tapered mould for the continuous casting of steel consists of end plates clamped between side plates, the end plates being movable to adjust the angle of the taper to suit the casting rats or casting temperature. In the form of Fig. 2, the end walls 3 each comprise a copper plate 7 on a backing plate 8, and are spaced by gauge rods 20 from a plate 17 hinged at 25. Cooling water chambers in the mould walls are subdivided longitudinally and possibly transversely. The plate 17 can be tilted by a drive mechanism 22 acting on screw 21, to alter the angle of the plate 3. In another form, Fig. 4, the plates 3 are hinged (37) at their lower edges and adjusted by a screw 36 and drive mechanism 35 near the top. An automatic control system is provided to adjust the taper angle during casting if the casting rate or casting temperature changes. In this system the rate of heat extraction by the cooling water in the end walls is compared both with a reference value and with the averaged rate of heat extraction by the side walls. A computer receives the results of these comparisons and may combine them in any desired way to control the drive means for the taper angle setting mechanism. During an adjustment of the angle of the end walls the clamping pressure of the side walls is slackened off to approximately twice the internal ferrostatic thrust.
