1469840 Electromagnetic scanning G O OKIKIOLU [trading as OKIKIOLU SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL CO] 1 April 1975 [17 April 1974] 16891/74 Heading H1P In apparatus for generating scanning magnetic or ultrasonic or electrostatic energy fields (Fig. 1) apertures are arranged along a helical line of a cylindrical drum 1 rotatable by motor 10 to be relatively displaced horizontally and vertically. A source 4 of the appropriate energy (which may be light) is placed within the drum and energized by source 6. Thus energy waves emergent from the apertures are transmitted through slit 8 to fall on a screen (not shown). The apertures may contain focusing devices, or alternatively reflectors receiving energy waves from a source exterior of the cylinder and directing it upon the slit. The drum may carry strips of material of conductivity or dielectric content distinct from that of the drum, arranged helically thereon (2, 3 &c.) which on rotation are successively introduced into electrostatic fields between electrodes of which one is strip 8 and the other is defined by a cylindrical element (not shown) within the drum. Alternatively strip 8 may co-operate with electrodes on the drum which are interconnected to energization over a slipring. On rotation of the drum the electrostatic field is varied to produce a linear scan along the line of strip 8 or along other lines parallel to the drum axis. The apparatus may be enclosed in an air dielectric or an electrolytic medium, and may be A.C. energized. Where the required scanning energy field is magnetic, strips of permanent magnets, electromagnets, or magnetizable material 2, 3 are helically arranged on the drum 1 and on rotation the elements generate magnetic scanning of a strip 8 of magnetizable material or alternatively along other lines parallel to the drum axis. The latter may surround an inductor located at 4 energized by a source 6. The magnetic field may be initiate linear movement of an element along the strip 8 relatively to the drum, or the element may be fixed and the drum movable. The strip 8 in which the scanning magnetic energy fields are produced may comprise the narrow rectangular end 12 of a magnetic solenoid (Fig. 2) comprising a coil 14 wound on a tapering rectangular former 11 of the kind described in Specification 1,407,151 wherein the magnetic impulses induced at the narrow end 12 are magnified for detection. The drum may be rotated by axial linear movement of a magnetic member exerting magnetic force on the helically arranged magnetic elements. These elements may be continuous rather than discrete (Fig. 3, not shown) or arranged spirally on the surface of a disc (Fig. 4, not shown) and the continuous helical strip may also comprise energy reflectors or an energy transmitting helical slot. Similarly the helix of the disc surface may comprise permanent or electromagnets, magnetizable materials, dielectric or conductor strips of conductivity or dielectric content differing from the disc material, or a reflective material. The disc and its helix may form an electrode energized through a slipring cooperating with a further electrode (not shown) in a gaseous medium.
