Abstract
1469699 Mixing apparatus D BOENISCH 22 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22866/74 Heading B1C A mixing apparatus comprises a container 10 mounted on a support for an orbital motion of translation in a plane and containing an array of blades 11 fixed to the container and spaced along a closed curve 12 parallel to the plane of motion; the blades lie in planes between the radial and tangential to the curve and their outer ends face the direction of motion, whereby a circulating flow is set up in the opposite direction to the orbiting motion, and sub-flows pass between the blades to recombine in the centre of the container and flow round the ends of the blades to the outer region 13. The container may be discharged (see Fig. 4) by providing a central discharge tube 19 and a cover 17 with a pressure air inlet 18. In modifications the blades may be surmounted by a tube (20, Fig. 5 not shown); the blades may be unequally spaced, Fig. 6 (not shown) and Fig. 7; there may be more than one array of blades which may be arranged coaxially (26, 27, Fig. 8 not shown) or spaced round the container (Fig. 9, not shown). The blades may be of metal or synthetic material or rubbercovered, and of the same material as the container or different. They may be plane, curved, upwardly tapering, twisted or inclined. Continuous discharge apparatus may comprise a mixer of the type of Fig. 9 in which a radial baffle (28) separates two of the blade arrays, inlets (30, 31) being arranged on one side of the baffle and the outlet (29) on the other. Another embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown) comprises a plurality of mixers of the type shown in Figs 1 and 3 arranged in a circle on a common support and having passages (32b, 32c) between them except for the two at which the materials are respectively supplied and withdrawn. An embodiment in which the mixing chamber is in the form of a horizontal trough, Fig. 7, is orbited in a vertical plane, materials being fed in at 23 and the mixture discharged at 24. Foundry sand is separately mixed with resin and with hardener in the embodiment of Fig. 11, sand being fed at 40 and divided between two sets of mixers on a common orbiting support, and resin and hardener being separately fed at 41, 42 respectively. The two pre-mixers are then mixed in a final mixer 45 which may be mounted on the common support or separately.
