Abstract

1469445 Mounting electrical resistance heaters RHEEM INTERNATIONAL Inc 28 Oct 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 46461/74 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] The head 30 of an immersion heater which is to be attached to a water heating tank is formed of a conductive plastics part 31, in which one end of the sheath 7 of the mineral insulated metal sheathed element is embedded, and a non- conducting plastics part 35 through which the leads from the heating resistance pass. The plastics used in both parts is preferably the same, viz. a phenolic compound with fillers to improve resistance to temperature cracking and chemicals. The conductive part has in addition conducting particles 32 (or aggregates of conducting particles) dispersed therethrough. The particles may be of carbon (graphite, carbon black or lamp black), copper, iron, zinc, aluminium, magnesium, tin, antimony, silver, or chromium, singly or in combination, to give a resistance of the part 31 between 200 and 1000 ohms, typically 500-600 ohms. The object is to reduce current flowing between copper sheath 7 and a sacrificial magnesium anode (2, Fig. 1, not shown), to reduce the rate of depletion of the anode. A prior art device (Fig. 2, not shown) has a tinned copper sheath one end of which is embedded in a steel head. Another prior art device has a copper sheath 7 and a laminated head which is insulated from the tank, electrical connection to the anode being via a 500 ohm resistor (Fig. 3, not shown).
