Abstract

1469047 Cleaning papermaking felts WESTVACO CORP 25 March 1975 [26 March 1974] 12519/75 Heading D2A Apparatus for cleaning an endless papermaking felt F 3 comprises at least one nozzle 45, 45a secured to a vehicle 40 movable across the width of the felt, the nozzle(s) 45, 45a spraying a high pressure cleaning liquid such as water onto the felt surface, and means for sensing the speed of the felt and for controlling the vehicle 40 accordingly such that on each revolution of the felt the vehicle moves approximately the width of the impact area of the liquid from the nozzle(s) thereby cleaning the felt along a 'helical' track. As shown the vehicle 40 has wheels 42 running on a rail assembly 29 attached to an I-beam 27. The vehicle is driven by a flexible belt 60 passing around a roller 63 driven by a stepping motor 65. The motor 65 is controlled by a pulse generator 66 mechanically or electrically coupled to a press roll 26 such that the pulse frequency is a measure of the speed of the felt F 3 . A timing switch 68 may be provided to stop liquid flow to the nozzles 45, 45a should the vehicle 40 stop for more than a predetermined time. Proximity switches 51a and b, 52a and b are preferably provided to reverse the vehicle 40 at its limits of travel. The vehicle may have a rapid return speed.
