1468807 Saw handles; injection moulding saw handles BURGON & BALL Ltd 19 April 1974 [19 April 1973] 19149/73 Headings B4K and B5A A saw handle includes a synthetic plastics portion connected or adapted to be connected to a saw blade and a wooden portion 20 spanning a space between elements 16, 18 of the synthetic plastics portion said wooden portion 20 providing a grip for the handle. The plastics portion may be moulded around end portions of the wooden handle, the end portions having undercut or keying portions or attachments (Figs. 3-10, not shown) to ensure satisfactory connection. To prevent splitting of the wood under the high pressure encountered in the injection moulding process preformed plastics sealing members 50 may be placed over, and possibly fixed to, the ends of the wooden grip. The wooden grip may have a through hole to allow plastics material to run therethrough thereby uniting the elements 16, 18, and in this case, to prevent splitting of the wood, a thickwalled plastics tube 52, Fig. 16, is positioned in the hole preparatory to the moulding process. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 17, not shown) the wooden portion is positioned in the plastics handle by springing apart the elements 16, 18 which are then fixed to the wooden portion, e.g. by screws. In further modifications the plastics handle is in two split portions which are fixed to the wooden grip by a single through rivet or by screw fixings (Figs. 18, 19, not shown). The plastics portion may be fixed to the saw blade by screws or rivets or preferably by moulding, portions of the plastics material on either side of the blade being united through apertures in the blade.
