Abstract

1468690 Feeding refuse to incinerators CONSUMAT SYSTEMS Inc 4 July 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 29699/74 Heading B8S [Also in Division F4] In an incinerator having a controlled air supply and a fire door 40 closing a charging shoot, two rams 82, 84 reciprocate within the shoot to feed refuse from a hopper 48 to the furnace, the lower ram 84 reciprocating continuously while the hopper contains refuse, and the upper ram 82 reciprocating with the lower ram 84 to clear the shoot when the hopper is empty. The space below the hopper enables the lower ram 84 to feed the refuse without jamming, and the action of the upper and lower rams 82, 84 together enables the shoot to be cleared so that the fire door 40 can be closed to avoid disburbing the air supply. A part cylindrical pivoted gate 62, Fig. 5, closes the bottom of the hopper with one wall 68 and supports the refuse on its curved side 72 while the hopper is being refilled, and is opened and closed automatically. Ashes are cleared from a shoot 118 by a plunger 132 which pushes the ashes through a flap 124 to a conveyer when a sensor, which may be a sonic sensor, indicates to the control unit that the hopper is filled with refuse, the control unit operates the hydraulic system to open the hopper door to allow material to fall into the shoot, opens the fire door, which has closed and open sensors which may be limit switches, and initiates the reciprocation of the lower feed ram, which need only travel to beyond the opening of the hopper. When the hopper is empty, a second sensor causes the hopper door to close when a sensor indicates that the lower pusher is in its retracted position, then operates both the rams to clear the shoot. A forward limit switch causes both rams to be retracted to just forward of the hopper outlet, and causes the fire door to close. The rams are then fully retracted. The ashpusher control and the automatic temperature control for the ignition and secondary combustion burners and for the air supply may all be linked with the charging control unit.
