Abstract

1468612 Automatic choke valves BRIGGS & STRATTON CORP 17 June 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 26775/74 Heading F1H [Also in Division G1] In an I.C. engine, a choke valve 15, Fig. 2, is biased towards the closed position by a weighted lever 20 and is urged towards the open position as the engine speed increases by means of a vane 21 which is acted on by the stream of air from the engine cooling blower 6. The vane 21 is carried by a hub 24 which is freely journalled on a spindle 22, and operates the choke valve 15 via linkage 25, 26, 19. The spindle 22 is journalled in a bearing boss 23 and has a transverse slit 32, Figs. 2, 8, 9, engaged by the inner ends of a pair of bi-metallic coils 33, 34. The coils are oppositely wound, have their higher coefficients of expansion at opposite faces and have their free outer ends abutting oppositely-disposed shoulders 39, 39'. When the engine is cold, the coil 34 reacts against shoulder 39' and turns the spindle 22 into a position in which one end of an arcuate slot 46 in a collar 47 fixed to the spindle abuts a stop 48, and one end of an arcuate slot 44 in a further collar 43 fixed to the spindle then coacts with a projection 28 on the vane 21 to limit the extent to which the vane can move to open the choke valve 15. Meanwhile the coil 33 is out of contact with the shoulder 39 and therefore inoperative. When the engine is hot, the coil 34 is out of contact with the shoulder 39' and inoperative while the coil 33 now reacts against shoulder 39 to turn the spindle 22 to the position in which the opposite end of the arcuate slot 46 abuts the stop 48 and the opposite end of the arcuate slot 44 coacts with the projection 28 to hold the choke valve 15 slightly open when the engine is stationary and to allow the choke valve to be fully opened by the vane 21 when the engine begins to run.
