A cutter head for roughing and finishing spiral and hypoid bevel gears comprises a circular body member 2 a number of substantially radially inner and outer positioned cutting tools 7, 6, of rectangular cross-section, a plurality of pairs of grooves 5, 4, formed in the body in which are respectively secured the tools 7, 6 by way of wedges 9, 11, and 8, 10 respectively by screws 12 which extend through a ring member 3 which together with the body 2 constitute the cutter head. The setting of the tools in their desired position is effected by adjustment of the wedges by screw 22 and the cutting tools are aligned by the use of setting jigs and dial gauges. To provide appropriate front rake the grooves and the cutting tools are inclined backward with respect to feed direction which provides appropriate front clearance e and f shown in Fig. 4. The front faces of the cutting tools are also ground to produce the desired front rake i and j indicated in Fig. 1. The desired profile of the cutters is determined by the jigs which also determines the desired angle a and b of the cutting edge 14 and 15 of the respective outer and inner tools.
