Abstract

1468458 Safety closures for containers M B STULL 15 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 44686/74 Heading B8T A safety cap construction for a container comprises a cap body 14 with a top discharge opening 24 and cap 18 connected by flexible hinge 20, co-operable yieldable detent means to hold the cap on the cap body, e.g. bead 32 on spout 22 and bead 34 on skirt 36, an upstanding flange 26 preventing access to the juncture of the cap body and cap in the closed sealing position and pivot bearing means, e.g. surfaces 39, 40 on the cap body and rib 42 on the underside of the cap, whereby a lifting edge 56 of the cap 18 can be engaged by the finger of the user to pry the cap off the cap body when a depressing force is applied to a portion of the cap 18 adjacent to the hinge 20. A sealing plug 54, strengthening ribs 48, 46, upstanding lugs 59 and guard posts 61, 62 or (156), (158), Figs. 20-22 (not shown), may also be provided. Raised projections such as 58 or (160), Figs. 20-22 (not shown), can serve as an indication of the areas to be depressed. The bearing ribs may be offset from the longitudinal axis of the sealing plug, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and reinforcing lands (94), (96), Fig. 8 (not shown), placed on the bearing surface of the cap body. In the embodiment of Figs. 9-11 (not shown) a portion (108) of the upstanding flange (102) lying between guard posts (104), (106), is made thinner and discontinuous from the rest of the upstanding flange such that easier access is allowed to the lifting edge as the cap is tilted. The lifting edge 56 may rest on the top of the portion (120) of the upstanding flange (116), Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown). The diameter of the sealing bead (130) of the cap, Figs. 14-16 (not shown) in the vicinity opposite the point of attachment of the hinge 20 can be reduced or increased, as can that of the cap body sealing bead 22 at a similar point. On the periphery of the sealing side of the cap (132), Figs. 17-19 (not shown), an annular guide bead (134) helps align the cap on resealing. In a further embodiment, Figs. 23-27 (not shown), the tilting of the cap is carried out at 90 degrees to the hinge section. When the closure is sealed, the lifting edge (179) rests on a ledge (202) formed on the inner surface of upstanding flange (26a) at 180 degrees to a detent nib (206). The bearing means consist of ribs (183), (185) on the cap and groove (187) and nib (189) on the cap body. Pressure applied to projection (177) forces the rim portion of the cap downwardly past the detent nib (206) allowing the lifting edge (179) to be readily gripped. The safety closure may be formed as a one-piece moulding of plastics material.
