Abstract

1468331 Valves CORDISCORP 13 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 1306/75 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] A valve structure for use in conjunction with tubing 10, 60 for transporting cerebrospinal fluid from a source of such fluid within the body to a selected site within the body, comprises a pressure operated check valve 20 and a second valve 41 connected in series with valves 20 and tubing 10, 60 and including a hollow cylindrical casing 44 housing a hollow plug 46 and sapphire balls 50, 52 such that when the axis of the cylindrical casing is vertically orientated with the hollow plug 46 at the lower end ball 50 engages a valve seat 48 formed on hollow plug 46 and when the axis of the casing is horizontally orientated ball 50 falls away from valve seat 48 allowing free flow of fluid through valve 41. The valves 20, 41 are housed in parallel sockets 18, 43 respectively, in a housing 12 and are in flow communication via a chamber 40 in a cap 43 which connects with the housing 12 around the sockets. The opening pressure of the check valve 20 is variable by adjustment of a threaded hollow plug 32 which acts against spring 28. The opening pressure of the second valve 41 may be varied by provision of different numbers of balls 52, and a gasket 38 having a colour-coding relating to the opening pressure of the second valve may be provided between the cap 36 and housing 12. Suture apertures 62 may be provided for anchoring the structure in position in the body. The housing 12 is preferably formed of silicone rubber.
