Abstract

1468171 2-amino-4-hydroxy-7,8-dihydropteridine-6-carboxaldehydes WELLCOME FOUNDATION Ltd 1 May 1974 [1 Feb 1973] 5186/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds I and their salts in which R 1 and R 2 are C 1-4 alkyl or together with the C atom of the pteridine ring to which they are attached form a C 5-7 cycloalkyl ring are prepared by (1) selective oxidation of the corresponding 6-hydroxymethyl compound or (2) reductive cyclization of a compound III with the addition of a controlled amount of reducing agent to limit the reducing potential of the reaction mixture and separation of the compound I from the hydroxymethyl compound also formed. Compounds I prepared are those in which R 1 = R 2 = Me, Et or n-Pr. Compounds I are useful in the treatment of microbial infections and form with a carrier a pharmaceutical composition which may be administered orally, parenterally, rectally or topically.
