Abstract

1468144 Dental treatment J M HALSTEAD (W A DRUCKER) 12 June 1973 [12 June 1972 29 June 1972 24 Aug 1972 (2)] 27443/72 30611/72 26970/73 and 26968/73 Heading A5B Compositions for application to the teeth for the purposes of preventing calculus, removing plaque, removing caries and brightening teeth comprise an aqueous solution of an N-haloglycine (except N-monochloroglycine), N-halosulphamic acid, or an N-haloamine having 2 to 20 carbon atoms and containing a hydroxy group, a sulphonic acid group, a carboxylic acid group or an N-acyl or N-aminoacyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the halogen being selected from chlorine, bromine and iodine, and a sufficient amount of a buffer to maintain the pH at 10.5 to 11.5. The N-halo compound may be N-bromoglycine, N-iodoglycine, N-halosulphamic acid, N-chlorosulphamic acid, N-halo-2-aminoethanol, N-halosarcosine, N-chlorosarcosine, N-halotaurine, N- chlorotaurine, N-haloaminoethanesulphonic acid, N-halo-N-acetyl glycine, N-halo alpha aminoisobutyric acid or N-halo ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. The N-halo compound may be prepared in situ from an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypohalite and the amino compound. The buffer may be a phosphate or borate, e.g. Na2B4O7. The compositions may be applied to the teeth in the form of a pulsating jet stream. The compositions may be in the form of a paste or a mouthwash. The composition may be an aqueous solution formed by addition of one or more tablets preferably effervescent to water or an aqueous solution.
