Abstract
1468051 Polarization GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 21 March 1975 [10 April 1974] 15918/74 Heading G2J A Glan air-spaced polarizer, substantially of the form shown, comprises a crystal of a birefringent substance having a figure of merit defined by: |#n|N#| wherein N = No + Ne and #n = Ne-N0; No and Ne respectively being the R.I. of the substance, at any given wavelength, in respect of the ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray. The crystal may have a high birefringence such that the Brewster angle for the ray, O or E, having the greater R.I.is greater than or equal to the critical angle of the other ray. The crystal may be composed of one of these substances: Fe 2 O 3 , hematite; Mn 3 O 4 , hausmannite; ZnMn 2 O 4 , hetaerolite; MnTiO 3 pyrophanite; PbCrO 4 , crocoite; MgTiO 3 , geikielite, TiO 2 , rutile, or PbCO 3 , cerussite.
