Abstract
The display has a liquid crystal cell (32) comprising a liquid crystal film (34) between transparent walls (36, 40) provided with transparent electrode systems (38, 42). A potential difference can be applied to the electrodes to expose the liquid crystal to an exciting field, and the cell is part of a system comprising an analyser (44) and a polariser (46). When an exciting field is applied the liquid crystal exhibits negative dielectric anisotropy, and when there is no exciting field present the longitudinal axes of the liquid crystal molecules are oriented at right angles to the electrodes. This orientation is pref. effected by means of an interfacially active agent mixed with the liquid crystal.
