Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase a contrast, to facilitate half-tone display and to improve response by using a transparent material as at least either one of electrode substrates in a couple and by making a liquid-crystal material with a mixture of two components differring in index of double refraction. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid-crystal display element for picture display which utilizes the dynamic scattering effect of liquid crystal, at least either one of a couple of electrode substrates uses a transparent material. To obtain a liquid-crystal material to be sealed between the substrates, not less than one kind of the 1st component, such as cyclohexane carboxylic acid ester type liquid crystal, low in index of double refraction and not less than one kind of the 2nd component, such as azoxy or Schiff's base liquid crystal, high in index of double refraction are mixed to adjust the index of double refraction to 0.14-0.21. Thus, the display elements which provide excellent gradations, make a fast response enough to follow up motion picture display, such as television display, and have long DC operation life can be obtained by using the said mixed liquid-crystal system.
