Abstract
1466542 Controlling light MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 25 Feb 1975 [28 Feb 1974] 7837/75 Heading G2F In a two dimensional light deflection system comprising tandem deflectors operating in orthogonal directions, each deflector is of the type using anisotropic acoustic-optic Bragg diffraction wherein the anisotropy is provided by the optical activity of the acoustic - optic medium, e.g. TeO 2 or quartz, and a birefringent device such as a quartz or mica plate, or Soleil or Babinet compensator is disposed between the deflectors to adjust the polarization of the beam incident on the second deflector for optimum diffraction efficiency, deflectors of this type generally diffract a component of the incident beam which is elliptically polarized with a band related to the sign of optical activity of the medium. The relative retardation introduced by the birefringent device may be up to a half wave length and may be controllable, and the device may be rotatable about an axis parallel with the optical path. A like device may be disposed between a polarized light source and the first deflector.
