Abstract

1401085 Modulating light HEWLETTPACKARD CO 21 July 1972 [10 April 1972] 3147/75 Divided out of 1401083 Heading H4F In a tunable optical filter of the type wherein a portion of a plane polarized optical beam traversing an acoustically anisotropic photoelastic birefringent crystal is diffracted into an orthogonal plane of polarization by an acoustic wave having its group velocity vector collinear with the optical path, and is subsequently filtered out by a polarization analyser, the optical output face of the crystal is substantially normal to the acoustic group velocity vector and at an angle to the phase velocity vector so that on reflection the acoustic energy is reflected out of the optical path and so that the output optical aperture can be of maximum size. As particularly described the crystal may be of quartz, in which the group and phase velocities of a shear wave may diverge by up to 27 degrees, so that undesired acoustic resonances produced on reflection are greatly reduced. In addition the crystal may be coated with an acoustically and optically absorbent material as described more particularly in Specification 1,401,083. The polarization vectors of the input optical and acoustic shear waves are mutually at right angles.
