Abstract

1467644 Pistons WELLWORTHY Ltd 13 Dec 1974 [18 Dec 1973] 58625/73 Heading F2T The basic alloy of the crown 2 of a light metal piston, e.g. from an indirect injection diesel engine, is protected from thermal erosion by a plug 8 of high thermal strength surrounded and supported by a layer 4 of lower conductivity and a thermal strength between that of the plug and that of the basic alloy. The plug 8 may be of austenitic steel or, with an insulating layer 4 of a ceramic material such as silicon nitride, of a more heat resistant material to stand the higher operating temperature. The layer 4 may be formed integrally with either the crown 2 or the plug 8, by welding or plasma arc spraying. Alternatively, it may be separated by a fibrous alumina-slicate sealing gasket from either or both of the crown or plug. The layer 4 may alternatively be of sintered or wrought aluminium alloy incorporating Fe, Mn or Co. A wrought alloy may also contain Cu, Ni and/or Mg. A more heat resistant layer 4 is of austenitic or creep resistant ferritic stainless steel or Co, Ni or Ti alloys.
