Abstract

1467449 Coating apparatus: coating method MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 24 June 1974 [25 June 1973] 27979/74 Headings B2E and B2L [Also in Division C7] A substrate 14 is coated with particulate material 12 by exposing it in a non-magnetic vessel 13 containing the material 12 and permanent magnet elements 11 and applying a varying magnetic field thereto thereby causing the material 12 to impinge upon and coat the substrate 14. The substrate 14 may be a simple or complex shaped article of plastics, metal or other hard material and the material 12 may be one or a mixture of metals, graphite, molybdenum disulphide, and organic resins the material ranging in particle size from 0.1 micron to several hundred microns. An abrasive may be included to clean the substrate. The magnet elements 11, which are preferably each of twice the mass of the particles 12, may be made of gamma iron-oxide, hard barium ferrite, or aluminium-nickel-cobalt alloys and may be hard polymeric resin coated to prevent adhesion to the substrate. The magnetic field is produced by an annular device 10 which preferably produces a rotating magnetic field and the coating may be performed in an inert atmosphere or a vacuum.
