Abstract

1467081 Severing by liquid jet BELOIT CORP 16 May 1974 [4 June 1973] 21844/74 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for slitting and winding a travelling web into a plurality of rolls 38, 39, 40, Fig. 3, comprises a supply roll 10, a guide roll 11 for guiding the web through a slitting zone 12 in which a slitting device 16 is adapted to slit the web into a plurality of adjacent strips 26, 27, Fig. 3, which are then wound into separate rolls by a winder 13, 14, 15, the slitting device being such as to remove a kerf strip from the web in order to separate the web strips from one another. As shown in Fig. 3, the slitting device comprises a pair of high-pressure fluid jets 32, 33 mounted on a head 31 which is rotatable, e.g. by gear means, in order that the width of the kerf may be increased or decreased; a second head 16 mounting fluid jets 22, 23 may be provided as shown in Fig. 3. The heads are mounted on independent supports which are laterally adjustable relative to the width of the web. The working fluid, e.g. water, is received, together with the kerf strip, by a container 17 and, in the case of paper, carried away by a conduit 18 to a pulper to be mixed with stock for feeding to a paper-making machine; the kerf strip is directed into the container by means of an air jet 21, Fig. 1. The web may pass over a tension control mechanism (48), Fig. 5 (not shown), which comprises an air jet (49) associated with a back-pressure measuring device (50) which registers the pressure as a function of the tension in the web and thereby regulates the drive (60) for the winder. Alternatively, the air-jet may be replaced by a device which measures the pressure acting on a guide roll (46). In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the pressurized fluid is fed into a guard tube 64 and a container 65 thereby preventing physical contact with the jet, and the kerf strip is directed into a shoot 66. The guard tube and shoot are mounted on a pivotable frame 67, a switch device 69 being provided for preventing operation of the jet when the frame is not in its working position shown in Fig. 6.
