Abstract
1466689 EPR spectrometer micro-wave cavities VARIAN ASSOCIATES 18 July 1974 [19 July 1973] 31931/74 Heading G1N An EPR spectrometer has a resonant microwave cavity 11, Fig. 1, provided with a relatively large waveguide 31 through which a sample can be placed in the cavity. The waveguide is so dimensioned that its cut-off frequency is lower than the resonant frequency of the cavity; to prevent energy loss the waveguide is positioned so that its fundamental mode cannot be excited by the currents in the cavity, and it is also removably connected to a smaller hollow waveguide 34 whose cut-off is above the resonant frequency. Small samples can be inserted through the waveguide 34, while larger ones necessitate its removal. To irradiate the sample with light, a set of closely spaced apertures 40-44 are provided, this being suitable for use with a parallel sided beam, e.g. from a laser. The cavity shown is cylindrical, but a similar arrangement of waveguides and light inlets can be used with a rectangular cavity, Fig. 6 (not shown). A second waveguide 31 and smaller waveguide 31 may be provided opposite those shown in Fig. 1.
