1466618 Self-closing gates; spring hinges ELECTROMATIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 43044/74 Headings E2F and E2M A self-closing gate, which allows the passage of vehicles but not animals, comprises uprights 11 insulated from and hinged to gate posts 15 and transverse electrified rods 10 secured to the uprights; the uprights being secured at their upper ends by a hinge 18 and at their lower ends by a self-closing hinge arrangement; both sets of hinges insulating the gate from the gate posts. As shown the hinge 18 is a pliable rubber or plastics connection but an insulated conventional hinge can be used (Figs. 6-8 not shown). Insulating caps 13 are mounted on the ends of the rods 10, allowing a vehicle to push open the gate. The selfclosing hinge arrangement is shown in Fig. 3: a block 20 (of insulating material such as alkathene) is mounted on each post 15 and has two cavities which can receive cylindrical members 23 mounted on each upright. A resilient band 25 extends around each upright and gate post and over a bracket 26, and when an upright is pivoted one member 23 lifts out of its cavity 22 against the force of the band 25. The gate may be held open by placing one member 23 into the other cavity (Fig. 5). In a further embodiment (Figs. 6-8 not shown) the elements 20, 23 are interchanged, the block 20 being of metal and the members 23 having insulating coverings, and springs effect closing.
