Abstract

1466538 Preparation of titanium trichloride catalyst component SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 26 Feb 1975 8028/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A gamma-TiCl 3 olefin polymerization catalyst component is obtained by (i) reducing TiCl 4 with an alkyl aluminium of the formula R 2 AlR<SP>1</SP> where R is alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkyl at a temperature below - 50‹ C., (ii) washing the reduced product with an aromatic hydrocarbon at a temperature below 140‹ C. and separating the solid from the hydrocarbon, and (iii) heattreating the washed product at a temperature above 140‹ C. to convert the beta-TiCl 3 into gamma-TiCl 3 . A further washing/separation step using an aliphatic hydrocarbon may take place after step (iii) if the latter is carried out in the presence of the aromatic hydrocarbon. The Example refers to the production of a gamma- TiCl 3 by (i) reducing TiCl 4 with Et 3 Al in npentane at -100‹ C., (ii) washing with isooctane followed by toluene, and (iii) heating the product at 160‹ C., as a slurry in decane, followed by cooling and washing with isooctane.
