Abstract

1482733 Titanium trichloride SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 2 July 1976 [4 July 1975] 28256/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Violet TiCl 3 is made by reducing TiCl 4 with a trialkyl aluminium compound at below - 50‹ C., typically - 60‹ to - 110‹ C., and converting the brown TiCl 3 thus formed to the violet form at a temperature up to 250‹ C., wherein the reduction is carried out in a liquid hydrocarbon medium comprising an aliphatic hydrocarbon and 0À5-3 mol. of aromatic hydrocarbon per mol. trialkyl aluminium compound. The liquid hydrocarbon medium preferably has a freezing point at least 5‹ C. lower than the reduction temperature. Suitable aliphatic hydrocarbons are pentane, hexane, heptane or mixtures thereof. Preferred aromatic hydrocarbons are benzene, toluene, o- or m-xylene, ethyl benzene, cumene or mixtures thereof. The preferred solvent comprises pentane and toluene. The molar ratio of trialkyl aluminium compound to TiCl 4 may be 0À3-0À5 : 1 and they are reacted for a period of 0À5-5 hours. The brown TiCl 3 may be washed with a hydrocarbon and converted by heating at 100-180‹ C., preferably under an inert atmosphere. The violet TiCl 3 thus obtained is preferably washed with an aliphatic hydrocarbon and employed as a polymerization catalyt (see Division C3).
