Abstract

1466468 Production of terephthalic and isophthalic acid dichlorides DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 9 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 43839/74 Heading C2C A process for producing terephthalic acid dichloride or isophthalic acid dichloride by hydrolysis of 1,4-bis-(trichloromethyl)-benzene or 1,3-bis-(trichloromethyl)-benzene, comprises introducing into a reactor a quantity of the desired phthalic acid dichloride and effecting the hydrolysis in the reactor in the presence of the said phthalic acid dichloride and in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to produce further phthalic acid dichloride. The reaction temperature is preferably in the range sufficiently high to promote a high reaction velocity, e.g. 110 to 180‹ C. The catalyst concentration preferably amounts to between 0À01 and 1% by weight based on the hexachloroxyl enes used.
