1464298 Preparing aromatic polyesters VSES NI INST SINTETICHESK SMOL 18 Sept 1974 40628/74 Heading C3R An aromatic polyester is prepared by reacting (i) a monomeric bisphenol with (ii) an aromatic dicarboxylic dihalide in the presence of (iii) an alkali and (iv) a water-soluble salt of a metal of Group Ia or IIa of the Periodic Table, the reaction being performed in a waterorganic liquid medium, the organic liquid being immiscible with water in an amount of at least 25% by volume. Specified organic liquids are methylethylketone, tetrahydrofuran and dioxan. The compounds used in the examples are (i) bisphenol A optionally with 2-#-hydroxyethyl- 3,3 - bis(4 - hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine, phenolphthalein, 9,9 - bis(4 - hydroxyphenyl)- fluorine and resorcinol, (ii) isophthalic and terephthalic acid dichlorides, isophthalic acid difluoride, diphenylhexafluoropropane dicarboxylic acid dichloride, naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dichloride, diphenyloxide-4,4<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxylic acid dichloride and benzophenonedicarboxylic acid dichloride, (iii) sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide, and (iv) potassium chloride, sodium chloride, lithium chloride, barium chloride, potassium bromide, potassium carbonate, sodium nitrate and calcium acetate. The aromatic polyester may be prepared in the form of a powder by precipitation from an emulsion or solution prepared by the above process.
