Abstract
1466465 Ceramic-coated fibrous structure, supported oxidation catalysts E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 April 1974 16677/74 Headings B1E and B2E [Also in Division D1] A fluid-permeable self-supporting refractory structure comprises a) an assembly of yarn arranged so that a plurality of well-defined apertures extend therethrough, the yarn comprising refractory oxide fibres containing at least 70% by weight Al 2 O 3 and constituting 20-75% by weight of the structure, b) 0-40% by weight of the structure of a fused, substantially non-porous binder having a softening point above 750C, the binder binding nearly abutting portions of the yarns, and c) 15-60% by weight of the structure of a ceramic coating having a melting point above 1000C and a porosity of 20-70% which at least partially surrounds the yarns but does not close the apertures. The yarn assembly may be formed from woven or knitted fibres or may be a random arrangement of bulked or textured yarns. When of high density, the assembly may be apertured by needling. It may particularly comprise a number of layers of spacedapart parallel rows of yarn, the yarns in different layers crossing to define square- or diamond-shaped apertures, and may be in the form of a tube comprising spaced helical convolutions of yarn. The fibres are usually substantially α-alumina and may be produced from refractory oxide precursor fibres, particularly fibres constituted by alumina together with basic aluminium salts. The binder (when present) may be applied in the form of a frit, dispersion or solution but is preferably also fibrous, comprising siliceous glass (particularly SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -MgO), borosilicate, aluminosilicate or crystalline ceramic fibres. The ceramic coating may comprise one or more oxides or oxide compounds (mullite, spinel) or precursors therefor (alumina hydrate, basic aluminium chloroacetate, aluminium chloride or magnesium acetate) and may especially contain at least 40% by weight Al 2 O 3 together with BaO, CaO, MgO, ZrO 2 or TiO 2 . Additional applications of the ceramic composition may be made after firing of the initially-coated assembly. The refractory structures, especially when in tube form, may be used as supports for catalysts. In Examples, a ceramic-coated reticulated tube having the above structure is soaked in platinum resinate solution and fired to provide a coating of platinum catalyst.
