Abstract

1465206 Fluid permeable structure E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 April 1974 16678/74 Heading D1P [Also in Divisions Bl and B2] A fluid-permeable self-supporting refractory support structure comprises a) an assembly of yarns arranged so that a plurality of welldefined apertures extend therethrough, the yarn comprising siliceous fibres containing 40-80% by weight of SiO 2 and at least 18% by weight Al 2 O 3 and having a softening point of 750-1300‹C, the yarn constituting 20-85% by weight of the structure, and b) 15-80% by weight of the structure of a ceramic coating having a melting point of 1000-2800‹C and a porosity of 20-70% which at least partially surrounds the yarn but does not close the apertures. The yarn assembly may be formed from woven or knitted fibres or may be a random arrangement of bulked or textured yarns. When of high density, the assembly may be apertured by needling. It may particularly comprise a number of layers of spaced-apart, parallel rows of yarn, the yarns in different layers crossing to define square- or diamond-shaped apertures and may be in the form of a tube comprising spaced helical convolutions of yarn. The fibres may particularly have a composition of 61-66% SiO 2 , 20-26% Al 2 O 3 and 9-15% MgO. The ceramic coating may be applied to the yarns before or after assembly as an aqueous dispersion or solution by immersion, roller, spraying or passage of the yarn through a die. The coating composition may comprise one or more oxides or oxide compounds (alumina, magnesia, silica, mullite, spinel) or precursors therefor (alumina hydrate, basic aluminium chloroacetate, aluminium chloride, magnesium acetate), and preferably comprises at least 40%Al 2 O 3 together with BaO, CaO, MgO, ZrO 2 or TiO 2 . Additional applications of the ceramic composition may be made after drying and heating of the initially coated product.
