Abstract

1466171 Aerials STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 1 April 1975 [9 April 1974] 15652/74 Heading H4A A coaxial radiating cable comprises a central conductor 11, a dielectric layer 12 and a leaky outer conductor 13 having a layer or coating of conducting material which has a conductivity less than that of the outer conductor 13. The layer 14 may be a paint containing carbon or metal (e.g. aluminium, zinc, nickel, iron or steel) or it may be a sheath of polyethylene or pvc containing carbon, Fig. 2 (not shown). When the outer conductor is coated with conductive paint, it may be protected by a low loss sheath 15, e.g. of polythene. The outer conductor is made "leaky" by longitudinal slot 13a. The cable is to be used in radio communication systems in underground tunnels &c. and is said to reduce the "standing wave pattern" caused by interference between waves in the primary cable mode and in a secondary mode caused by the interaction of the electric currents in the outer surface of the outer conductor with the ground plane outside the cable.
