Abstract

1466027 Extruding permeable material TOYO SODA MFG CO Ltd 15 May 1975 [13 Sept 1974 20 Sept 1974] 20653/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Extruded water- and air-permeable materials are made by mixing (1) 100 parts by wt. of a thermoplastic resin, (2) 10 to 100 wt. parts of a filler in the form of particles having a diameter or length of at least 0À1 mm. and which does not melt at temperatures up to at least 30‹ C. higher than the softening point of the thermoplastic resin, and (3) a water-containing component which may be the filler itself; extruding the resulting mixture at a temperature not high enough to melt the filler but higher than the softening point of the thermoplastic resin and above 100‹C. and then cooling the extruded product sufficiently rapidly to prevent annealing thereof, wherein water comprising at least 0À3 wt. per cent of the water-containing component is evaporated during the extrusion. In the examples mixtures of polyethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a watercontaining material which is nylon film pieces, cellulose film pieces, polyethylene/cellulose laminated film pieces, CaSO 4 .2H 2 O, silica and/or sawdust, and optionally polypropylene film pieces were extruded through a tubular nozzle to form air- and water-permeable tubes which were rapidly cooled.
