1465919 Mixing apparatus ESCHER WYSS AG 7 May 1974 [7 May 1973 21 Dec 1973 (3) 9 April 1974] 20116/74 Heading B1C In a foundry mixing machine for mixing sand with a liquid binder and hardener the sand is supplied via an inlet 1 and annular passage 2 to a mixing space 3 while the binder and hardener are supplied via a feed device disposed over the mixing space 3, the mixture then travelling between two relatively rotatable bodies of revolution 8, 9 which are provided with overlapping projections 13, 13' and finally being discharged at an outlet 7. The binder and hardener are mixed together before contact with the sand in an inverted chamber 63 into which the streams of binder and hardener are introduced separately, being directed at the walls of the chamber, and a tangential jet of air is admitted through nozzle 62 to provide a thorough swirling of these ingredients in the chamber 63. An adjustable valve member 19 cooperable with a conical surface 21 on the feed means for the binder/hardener controls the size of the annular passage 2 and thus the inflow of sand to the mixing space 3. The casing may be in two hinged portions (Fig. 2 not shown) or in three separable parts (Fig. 3 not shown) separable under the action of fluid pressure cylinders to allow for cleaning. Electrical controls are described (Fig. 4 not shown) for regulating the feed rates of feed pumps for the hardener and binder, controlling valves for admitting sand, hardener and binder to the machine and for controlling the drive to the rotary body of revolution (9). The machine may be mounted on a swing- ing arm (Fig. 5 not shown) to facilitate discharge of the mixture at the positions required in the foundry work area.
