Abstract

1465804 Propellants AEROJET-GENERAL CORP 7 June 1974 [7 June 1973] 25322/74 Heading C1D A propellant composition comprises a major amount of a solid inorganic oxidizing salt, a minor amount of a combustible organic resin binder, and from 0À1 to 5% by weight of an additive comprising a combination of particulate carbon and an oxide or carbide of Th, W, Si, Mo, Al, Hf, Zr, or V, the additive acting as a combustion stabilizer without leading to the formation of combustion smoke. The binder is an elastomeric polymer formed from a functionally-terminated liquid butadiene polymer, for example a hydroxy-terminated butadiene cured with a polyisocyanate, a carboxyterminated butadiene cured with an amine or epoxide, or a polybutadiene acrylonitrile-acrylic terpolymer cured with an epoxide. The specification lists suitable polyisocyanates and also diols and polyols which may be included. Thorium or iron acetylacetonate may be present as a cure catalyst. In examples, the oxidizing salt is ammonium perchlorate, the binder is a reaction product of hydroxy-terminated butadiene and toluene diisocyanate and the additive comprises carbon in the form of powder, platelets, flakes, or unbroken or broken hollow carbon spheres and zirconium carbide.
