Abstract

1464775 Sharpening knives WILTSHIRE CUTLERY CO PTY Ltd 26 March 1973 [26 March 1973] 13374/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division F3] A blade sharpener and scabbard combination comprises a housing 2 and a blade sharpening device 5 having two sharpening elements 17, Fig. 2, each defining a respective sharpening edge, the elements being arranged in crossed relationship to each other to define a sharpening recess 18, means mounting the elements to permit them to move relative to each other so as to vary the size of the recess and resilient means biasing the elements into a normal rest position. The device 5 is mounted on a carrier 6 urged about a pivot 7 towards an upper wall 9 of the housing by a spring 8. A reaction member 13 acts as a guide for the upper edge of the blade and is mounted on a pivot 12 on the carrier. The device 5 consists of a support member 14 and spaced arms 15 to each of which is secured a sharpening element 17 of tungsten carbide or abrasive material. Each arm is formed with a groove 21 to provide resiliency so that the arms, and thus the elements 17, can be moved apart as a knife blade is moved between the elements. The support member 14 is mounted by a pivot to the carrier 6 to positions determined by engagement of a resilient flange 23 with stops 24, 25. In another embodiment, the sharpening elements 117, Fig. 5, and support element 114 are formed from a single piece of resilient metal. In further embodiments, the sharpening elements are in the form of overlapping discs, and the carrier is arranged for linear movement.
